CITE BARKLY PROJECT: SUSTAINING LOW ACHIEVERS IN THEIR STUDIES

SPONSORED BY: THE GROUP "CHEVALIERS DE MARIE REINE DE LA PAIX"

Mission: We are dedicated to the academic fulfilment, of a group of Low – achiever youngsters residing at Barkly, which is vital for their personal development and will ultimately benefit the whole society.

Objective: To make good use of resources to assist in the education and self development of the group.

Background: These youngsters come from underprivileged families and have many difficulties to cope with their studies.

For the past few years, selfless volunteers have been conducting remedial classes every Saturday from 12h00 to 15h00. However, a situational analysis has revealed that these remedial classes could be more exploited to their full potential by making a few improvements.

To this effect, our CSR project will be devoted to the upgrading of those existing Saturday classes.

Hereunder is a list of the improvements to be accomplished:

  • The recruitment of qualified Educators in specific fields and subjects to enhance the existing structure.
  • The introduction of new subjects, namely – Arts, Music, Cookery and Physical Education, to boost the self esteem and self confidence of a young child. Less academically – gifted students are more likely to be manually skilled to excel at the above – mentioned subjects which also offer future career opportunities.
  • Organising ‘workshops’ tailored for parents as many face many difficulties in coping with parenthood  and need “parental skills”  to be up to speed with the challenges of our technological world.
  • The recruitment a psychologist for counselling sessions with families.
  • To ensure the wellbeing of these students, to surround and supervise them in their studies. The children will flourish when given adequate nutritional food and the required educational tools.
  • Proper remuneration of the working team i.e. the Educators and the psychologist will in a way act as a booster; the latter will be more motivated and will tackle this job with much more professionalism.

Organising educational outings at least once a year; this activity will also create a better relationship among all the beneficiaries of this project.
